Green Mountain Energy Offers New Solar Plan

Press Release | 2/17/2019

HOUSTON, Feb. 14 - Green Mountain Energy has launched its first electricity plan that lets customers power their homes with 100 percent solar electricity generated in Texas. Go Local Solar is inspired by the farm-to-table movement, harnessing electricity from Texas-based solar parks and giving both homeowners and renters local solar power with no rooftop installation or upfront costs required.

“Green Mountain is proud of our Texas roots and with this plan, we can offer our customers a way to protect our environment and power their homes with renewable energy,” said Mark Parsons, vice president of Green Mountain Energy. “We want solar adoption to be easy and accessible to even more Texans who share our passion for conservation and sustainability.”

Solar energy is increasingly affordable and available, and Green Mountain is committed to helping consumers realize the benefits of renewable energy. Solar energy produces zero greenhouse gases and requires limited amounts of water. It’s also sustainable, meaning that it will continue to generate power so long as the sun shines.

As part of the new plan, the 100 percent locally-sourced energy comes from a solar park in Meridian, Texas for customers living in the Dallas area and from Wallis, Texas for customers in and around Houston. For customers on the Go Local Solar plan, Green Mountain has purchased both electricity and renewable energy certificates from the solar park near their home. These solar parks have limited availability and customers who want locally sourced solar power are encouraged to enroll in the plan while capacity is still available. Green Mountain is also looking at additional solar parks to bring local solar to more customers in Texas.

In addition, Green Mountain will set aside $4 each month from the customer’s bill to support the Green Mountain solar fund, which helps fund a variety of solar projects, programs and technologies. To date, more than 7,500 kilowatts of solar panels have been installed across Texas with support from the Green Mountain solar fund - enough to power the lights of more than 15,500 households.

Green Mountain Energy Sun Club Donates to Girl Scouts Education Program

Press Release | 4/19/2014

Bayview, TX, April 17, 2014 -- The Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas today unveiled its first solar education program in conjunction with a new solar-powered pavilion at Camp Bayview, the result of a $35,000 donation from the Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™. As the first Girl Scout troop in South Texas to introduce hands-on activities for learning about how solar energy works, the Girls Scouts of Greater South Texas are at the forefront of educating young girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and giving them the tools to build brighter futures for themselves. Through the program, scouts from ages 5-17 can earn a "Solar Champion" patch.

The 7.5-kilowatt solar array comprised of 30 panels and covering 600 square feet on the top of the structure will help power the camp's cabins, pool and other facilities, while also providing shade for outdoor learning programs. A solar array of this size can generate an estimated 11,100 kilowatt-hours of pollution-free energy and avoid an estimated 13,100 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year – that's like not driving 14,700 miles.

To personalize the solar education program, the Sun Club® worked with Girl Scout staff to design the Solar Energy Patch Program, which is part of the Girl Scouts' STEM initiative as well as Green Mountain Energy's first such collaboration with Scouting. Upon completing the program, which ranges--based on age-level-- from observing experiments on how plants use solar energy to building a solar-powered oven, girls are awarded the "Solar Champion" patch to wear on their uniforms. Details about the program will be available on the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas website.

"We are so excited to be working with the Sun Club to not only save the council money that can be put into use for more programming, but to be able to offer education on Solar Energy to our Girl Scouts," said Danielle Altenburg, director of fund development for the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas. "Girl Scouts is about teaching the girls relevant topics that apply to today, and solar energy is a hot topic that we can teach the girls in a fun and exciting way."

On a mission to help girls build courage, confidence, and character, the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas welcomes girls from ages 5-17 across 26 counties throughout South Texas to participate in various camps and other programs that inspire the highest ideals of character, conduct, and patriotism. The Sun Club is a unique program enabling Green Mountain Energy Company and its employees, customers and supporters, including those in the Rio Grande Valley, to donate solar power to non-profits like The Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas.

"Incorporating solar energy into the operations and activities at Camp Bayview reduces electricity costs for this non-profit organization while bringing new learning experiences to scouts pursuing the Solar Champion patch," said Tony Napolillo, Sun Club Program Manager, Green Mountain Energy Company. "As renewable energy becomes an increasingly important resource to help us power our homes and businesses, it's more important now than ever that our future leaders – students across the country – understand both the impact and necessity of cleaner energy sources."

Green Mountain Energy Funds Solar Projects at Nine Non-Profits

Press Release | 12/17/2013

Austin, TX, December 16, 2013 -- The Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™ embarked upon a “Solar Road Trip” today to donate a total of $285,000 to nine non-profit organizations across Texas for solar energy and educational content. Over the next week, the Sun Club team will visit many of these recipients to recognize the work they do and present them with a check to help install onsite solar projects in 2014. The Sun Club is a unique program enabling Green Mountain Energy Company’s customers and employees to contribute funds to non-profits to install solar energy and provide renewable energy education.

The Sun Club program has donated over $2.3 million and 600 kilowatts of solar power to more than 50 non-profits since 2002. Green Mountain Energy Partners with BMW to Support Clean Energy

Press Release | 7/31/2012

AUSTIN, Texas -- BMW and Green Mountain Energy Company today announced their partnership to offer drivers of the BMW ActiveE the choice to support renewable energy for their cars. The ActiveE drivers, known as “Electronauts,” now have the opportunity to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Green Mountain to cover the estimated electricity that will be used to charge their electric vehicles (EVs).

Drivers of the BMW ActiveE can now support renewable energy every time they charge their electric vehicles.

“The partnership with Green Mountain is BMW’s next step to procure a sustainable mobility future for our ActiveE Electronauts,” said Rob Healey, EV Infrastructure Manager at BMW of North America. “We want to ensure all ActiveE drivers have the opportunity to source their energy needs from renewable generation, and this program is the perfect complement to BMW’s ActiveE solar offer. Based on their experience in renewable energy, Green Mountain is an ideal partner to support our mission.”

The ActiveE is an exclusive series driven by 700 Electronauts across five U.S. states. Each EV comes with a two-year lease and BMW uses the feedback from these drivers to develop premium, sustainable vehicles for the future.

As the world’s most sustainable automotive company, BMW offers more than just an emissions-free electric vehicle. BMW is now expanding the horizon of what electric mobility means by providing Electronauts with the resources to support clean energy with their cars.

“The majority of electricity in the U.S. is generated from non-renewable, fossil fuel sources, so EVs need to be powered with clean, renewable energy to be truly emissions-free,” said Scott Hart, president of Commercial Services for Green Mountain. “BMW is a thought leader in electric vehicle innovation, and their desire to ensure ActiveE drivers have the option to support renewable energy further demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability.”

The generation of electricity from non-renewable, fossil fuel sources, such as coal, is one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide (CO2), a primary greenhouse gas. For a one-time payment of $48, ActiveE drivers can purchase RECs to ensure the estimated amount of electricity that will be used to charge their vehicle during the lease period is replaced with renewable energy. ActiveE drivers who power their vehicles with renewable energy for the estimated mileage usage will offset 9,900 lbs of CO2 during the course of their two year lease, the equivalent of not driving 11,000 miles in a conventional gas-powered car.

Green Mountain Energy Announces Wind Energy Contract with Lord and Taylor

Press Release | 6/13/2012

Retailer becomes first Green Mountain commercial customer in New Jersey market.

Austin, TX, June 13, 2012 -- Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy and carbon offset solutions, is proud to announce that Lord & Taylor is purchasing 100 percent wind energy for seven of its retail stores in New Jersey. With this purchase, Lord & Taylor becomes the first commercial customer in New Jersey for Green Mountain, which recently began selling to businesses in the Garden State.

Lord & Taylor signed an 18 month contract with Green Mountain to purchase over 21 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of 100 percent wind energy for the seven New Jersey locations. The retailer’s purchase of clean energy is expected to avoid over 23 million pounds of CO2 (carbon dioxide) over the term of the contract, which is like taking 763,000 cars off the road for one day, or as much as 1.4 million trees can absorb in one year. In 2011, Lord & Taylor also partnered with Green Mountain to purchase 100 percent wind energy for its flagship store in Manhattan, as well as its Eastchester, NY, store.

“With this purchase, Lord & Taylor is demonstrating an impressive commitment to renewable energy and we are proud to work with them on this effort,” said Scott Hart, president, Commercial Services, Green Mountain Energy Company. “This partnership is also a great way to announce our entrance into the New Jersey market; we look forward to helping other commercial customers further their commitment to sustainable business practices.”

Lord & Taylor’s green power purchase exceeds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Green Power Partnership requirements. The EPA Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to purchase green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with electricity use. In April 2012, Lord & Taylor ranked 17th on the EPA’s Top 20 Retail list; based on this purchase for its New Jersey stores, the company would move up two spots to No. 15 on the current version of the list.

The wind energy to supply the seven Lord & Taylor stores will be purchased by Green Mountain in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), which is a widely accepted way to address the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity consumption. Purchasing RECs in the same quantity as Lord & Taylor’s electricity consumption ensures that the amount of energy used by each of the stores is added to the U.S. power grid from renewable sources and supports the further development of these projects.

“Green Mountain was awarded the electricity contract after a comprehensive bid process with multiple energy suppliers,” said Charles De Casteja, managing partner of Good Energy, Lord & Taylor’s energy consulting firm. “Green Mountain was selected as a result of its winning competitive electricity rate, favorable contract terms and leadership in the renewable energy industry.” Good Energy is a New York City-based energy management consulting firm, focused on saving customers money and increasing the value of their assets.

Green Mountain Energy Company Releases Sustainability Report

Press Release | 4/20/2012

New interactive Web portal highlights company's most significant environmental benefits to date

AUSTIN, Texas, Apr 20, 2012 -- Today Green Mountain Energy Company announced the latest data on the company's sustainability efforts with the release of its 2010-2011 Sustainability Report. This is the first time the report has appeared as a standalone, interactive website, inviting widespread consumer consumption. The information shared reflects the company's dedication to carbon neutral and environmentally friendly business practices.

As the nation's longest serving green power retailer, Green Mountain's sustainability report reinforces the company mission to change the way power is made by providing added transparency into its business. This is the company's 10th sustainability report and the first time it's been offered via a consumer-friendly online portal. The combination of company growth and several new sustainable initiatives has produced the most compelling report on Green Mountain to date.

"Environmental responsibility is at the core of our business and our company culture," said Paul Thomas, president and CEO, Green Mountain. "The way we conduct business is important to our customers, our employees and the community at large. We're proud of the work we do and I'm excited to share such a powerful, transparent report in a way that makes it more accessible to the public than ever before."

Sharing the company's environmental practices has been a part of Green Mountain's business since the company was founded 15 years ago. The first report was released in 1999, with subsequent reports following at least every two years thereafter. The report announced today shares results from 2010 through 2011.

2010 -- 2011 Report highlights include:

-- Introduction of an interactive, easy to navigate format. The online site combines various digital elements that are reader-friendly, visually engaging and invites reader feedback. It also offers more flexibility for Green Mountain to refresh content as it becomes available.

-- Largest annual environmental impact from customers to date. In 2011 alone, Green Mountain customers helped avoid 4.5 billion pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). That's the equivalent of 6 billion miles not driven or planting over 6.5 million trees!

-- Increased recycled materials within business practices. All billing envelopes for Texas residential customers were transitioned from 30% to 100% post-consumer recycled waste materials.

-- Nearly double employee participation in green commuter program. 2010 and 2011 were the strongest years for employees commuting in environmentally friendly ways to work since the program was launched in 2006. Employees saved over 62,000 miles of driving and avoided nearly 57,000 pounds of CO2 emissions.

-- Expansion of the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club(TM). Green Mountain customers have voluntarily contributed to the installation of almost 5,000 kW of new solar power on the roofs and campuses of non-profits while educating the surrounding communities on the importance of this renewable resource.

"Green Mountain is a healthy, financially sound company founded with a sustainable mission, and this report is a proof point that a company doesn't have to choose between profitability and environmental responsibility," continued Thomas. "As we grow, doing good for the environment will remain as a central pillar of our business."

The report follows indicators laid out by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) which thousands of companies consult as an international best practice guideline for sustainability reporting. The report also includes information about Green Mountain markets and products as well as its environmental standards. Examples of the company's commitment to integrity, especially within product offerings, are cited within the report including links to the company's voluntary, independent third-party "green audit" conducted annually.

Green Mountain Energy Celebrates 10 Years of Clean Energy in Texas

Press Release | 1/12/2012

Company pioneered renewable energy offerings for Texans; enables residents to help change the way power is made

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan 12, 2012 -- Austin-based Green Mountain Energy Company is celebrating the 10th anniversary of electric competition in Texas by recognizing its hundreds of thousands of customers who have chosen renewable energy. On January 1, 2002, the state of Texas opened its electricity market to full competition, allowing Texans the ability to choose their electric provider. As the first retail electric provider in the state to offer renewable energy and the longest serving green power provider in the U.S., Green Mountain has led the way in changing the way power is made.

"Opening the market to retail competition enabled Texans to not only choose their electric provider, but also choose the source of energy they want to support," said Paul Thomas, president of Green Mountain Energy Company. "As the first electricity provider in Texas to offer renewable energy to residential and commercial customers, Green Mountain is proud of the role we have played in the growth of renewable energy in the state and the success Texas has modeled for other states. We're especially thankful to all of our customers who have recognized the importance of clean energy and made the choice to support it. "

Green Mountain will be celebrating in 2012 with some of its first customers, who were among the earliest supporters of clean energy in Texas. The company will also be marking the anniversary through social media, customer engagement programs and at festivals and events throughout the year.

Over the last 10 years, the Lone Star state has evolved into one of the most successful competitive energy markets in the nation:

-- In 2008, 80% of registered voters in Texas favored a competitive electricity market(1)

-- By 2010, 55% of residential customers had exercised their power to choose and selected a competitive retail electric provider or product(1)

-- In 2011, the Texas market was described as the best retail market in the country for the fifth consecutive year and received a ranking of "Excellent" in the Annual Baseline Assessment of Choice in Canada and the United States (ABACCUS) report

Recognizing the exponential growth in the renewable sector over the past decade in Texas, Paul Thomas said, "More and more, consumers are recognizing the critical role that clean energy can play both in the health of the environment and in our state's economic future."

Green Mountain's Environmental Impact Since 2002

When Texas residents and businesses become Green Mountain customers, they help support the renewable energy industry and the development of clean energy sources like wind. Over the past 10 years, Green Mountain and its customers have made a positive impact on the environment and to the Texas economy, including:

-- Delivery of more than 10.7 billion kWh of cleaner energy to Texas customers

-- Spurring the development of 32 new solar energy facilities at various schools and nonprofit organizations in Texas through the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club(TM)

-- Avoiding nearly 8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which is the equivalent of : -- not driving nearly 9 billion miles

-- not plowing the entire state of Texas (172 million acres) with a diesel tractor

-- not burning over 8 million barrels of crude oil

-- 6.5 million Texas houses turning off their lights for a year

Green Mountain continues to have aggressive growth goals, including new market expansion plans and new products and services for both its residential and commercial customers.

Green Mountain Energy has Contract with Empire State Building

Press Release | 11/17/2011

NEW YORK, Nov 16, 2011 -- The world's most famous office building has been recognized for purchasing 100 percent renewable energy. The Empire State Building has received a 2011 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The annual awards recognize the country's leading green power purchasers for their commitment to renewable energy and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation's voluntary green power market. EPA presented the Empire State Building with the award at an event held in conjunction with the 2011 Renewable Energy Markets Conference in San Francisco today.

The Empire State Building, believed to be New York City's largest commercial purchaser of 100% renewable energy, is purchasing 55 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind power annually from Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy and carbon offset solutions. According to the U.S. EPA, as of April 2011, the purchase is the largest green power purchase of any EPA Green Power Partner in New York City.

The building's renewable purchase is enough green power to meet 100 percent of the building's purchased electricity use. The contract with Green Mountain is for two years.

The 2.85 million square-foot office building was one of only five organizations nationwide to be chosen as a Green Power Partner of the Year. The award recognizes EPA Green Power Partners who distinguish themselves through their purchase, leadership, overall strategy, and impact on the green power market.

"Receiving a Green Power Leadership Award is a significant accomplishment in the Empire State Building's ongoing commitment to challenge business as usual when it comes to energy efficiency and energy consumption," stated Anthony E. Malkin, Empire State Building Company. "This is only part of our continuing efforts to reduce our environmental impact and we hope to encourage other buildings globally to consider purchasing clean energy."

The Empire State Building's renewable energy purchase also has a significant environmental impact -- it avoids nearly 100 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year.

The Empire State Building currently ranks number 22 on EPA's 100% Green Power Purchaser list that highlights EPA Green Power Partners that are buying green power to meet 100 percent of their U.S. organization-wide electricity use.(1) U.S. EPA updates its Top Partner lists quarterly at http://www.epa.gov/greenpower/toplists/ .

The renewable energy that supplies the Empire State Building is being purchased in the form of wind Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from NRG Energy, Green Mountain's parent company. Purchasing RECs is a widely accepted way to address the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity consumption. Purchasing RECs in the same quantity as the Empire State Building's electricity consumption ensures that the amount of energy used by the building is added to the U.S. power grid from renewable sources and supports the further development of these projects.

The Empire State Building's green power purchase further reinforces the building's sustainability strategy. In July, the Empire State Building unveiled a $2 million interactive, multi-media sustainability exhibit at the second floor visitor's center, which showcases a $20 million energy retrofit project that was announced with President Bill Clinton and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The installation aims to educate the millions of people who visit the building every year on the positive global impact of both energy efficient building and sustainable living practices.

Green Mountain Energy Teams Up with San Diego Padres

Press Release | 11/9/2010

San Diego Padres Team Up with Green Mountain Energy Company for "Go Green" on Saturday, Sept. 4

Padres to offset game’s electricity usage and fans’ vehicle emissions by partnering with Green Mountain Energy Company

San Diego (Vocus) September 3, 2010

The San Diego Padres today announced today they are partnering with Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy and carbon offset solutions, for Padres “Go Green” on Saturday, September 4. The effort is part of the Padres ongoing effort to make PETCO Park as environmentally friendly as possible.

The Padres are partnering with Green Mountain Energy Company to offset both the estimated electricity usage for the game and the fans’ estimated roundtrip vehicle travel to and from the game.

Green Power The Padres are purchasing an estimated 41,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green energy to power the game. Green Mountain is providing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from a California solar project to offset the estimated electricity for Saturday’s game.

Carbon Offsets In addition, the Padres will offset nearly 210,000 pounds of carbon dioxide vehicle emissions associated with fans driving to and from the game. Green Mountain is providing carbon offsets from the Van Eck Forest Project in Humboldt County, California. The vehicle emissions are based on the Padres’ estimations of fan attendance and average fan mileage to and from the game.

By offsetting the electricity usage for the game and the vehicles emissions, the Padres are avoiding approximately 238,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That equates to taking roughly 1,100 cars off the road for a week.

“Green Mountain Energy Company is pleased to partner with the San Diego Padres to help make Saturday’s game greener,” said Scott Hart, President of Commercial Services, Green Mountain Energy Company. “The Padres’ commitment to renewable energy and carbon offsets promotes clean air and a healthy environment. They are leading by example and we hope more organizations will choose to follow their lead.”

Renewable energy facilities generate renewable energy certificates (RECs) when they produce electricity. Purchasing these certificates is a widely accepted way to address the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity consumption. Purchasing RECs in the same quantity as the Padres’ estimated electricity consumption ensures that the amount of energy used by the baseball team is added to the power grid from renewable sources and supports the further development of these projects.

In addition to offsetting electricity usage and fans’ vehicle emissions on Saturday, the Padres will offer fans the opportunity to recycle old cell phones and iPods through ecoATM. Before the game, fans will also have the chance to visit the “Go Green Village,” an educational expo featuring local environmental organizations and vendors. The annual “Padres Go Green” event is an extension of the organization’s year-round efforts to make PETCO Park as environmentally friendly as possible. Those efforts include recycling cooking oil, diverting food waste, grass clippings and coffee grinds for composting and printing the official Padres game-day program on recycled paper, using soy-based ink. The Padres’ environmental efforts have been recognized by several organizations. Most recently, PETCO Park won the 2010 City of San Diego Environmental Services Department’s Recycler of the Year award.

These days, environmentally conscious people want to go on a different diet. They would like to reduce the size of their carbon footprint, or go on a carbon diet, if you will.

But it's not so easy to know the best way to do that. After all, a few years ago you didn't even know you had a carbon footprint, much less knowing that you needed to reduce the size of it.

Green Mountain Energy in Yellow Springs News

Yellow Springs News | 5/27/2008

Yellow Springs residents will soon have the opportunity to ensure that the cost of their share of household energy use goes to supporting renewable power sources like the sun, wind, waterways and landfill gas. Village Council on Monday, May 19, agreed to initiate a new “green pricing” program that will offer residents the option of paying for the renewable energy production equivalent to their household power consumption. In other words, by paying a little extra on their utility bill, residents can support the production of green energy and reduce demand for fossil fuels to supply the country’s power grid.

The green pricing program allows Yellow Springs utility consumers to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) equivalent to the amount of kilowatt hours of electricity they consume each month. While all energy consumers are using the mix of renewable and non-renewable energy available on the power grid at any given moment, green pricing participants will be paying only for the renewable sources. According to Julia Blankenship, who directs the AMP-Ohio program that will administer green pricing for Yellow Springs, green pricing participants are thereby investing only in renewable energy.

Green Mountain Energy Provides RECs to Vancouver

North American Windpower | 3/29/2008

The Port of Vancouver has signed an agreement with Green Mountain Energy to purchase Green-e certified renewable energy credits (RECs). The port has purchased the equivalent of 60% of its estimated annual electricity usage from Pacific Northwest wind-sourced RECs.

In recognition of that commitment, the port has been certified as a member of the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership Leadership group.

"From an environmental and business standpoint, this is something that really makes sense for us to do," says Larry Paulson, the port's executive director. "When we put together our 2008 budget, we planned to purchase a certain amount of our energy exclusively from wind energy developments in the Pacific Northwest."

Buying pools may help encourage more green energy development. By combining consumers into one larger block, electricity suppliers say that they are able to leverage their buying power to bring down prices for all technologies, including renewable energy. In some cases around the country, cities are aggregating their businesses and households and buying renewable energy credits. Those "certificates" guarantee the production of such things as wind generation, thereby facilitating the development of more sustainable energy generation.

Consider Direct Energy, which has just completed a deal for 10 cities in Texas to buy almost 13,000 renewable energy credits over the next 15 years: The alternative energy provider says it will then purchase that energy and the associated credits from five West Texas wind farms, with a total output of 813 megawatts. That, it adds, will offset more than 2 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.
