Inc 500 Ranks Scentsy Top Consumer Products and Services Company

Press Release | 8/27/2010

MERIDIAN, Idaho--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Scentsy, Inc., a rapidly growing home fragrance company, has been named the No. 1 fastest-growing consumer products and services company in the country in the 2010 edition of the Inc. 500 list, published by Inc. magazine. Overall, Scentsy was No. 19 on the prestigious list of the fastest-growing private companies in America.

“We knew we were growing at an extraordinary pace, but the Inc. 500 ranking confirms the growth we have achieved is unmatched by all but a handful of companies” .“We knew we were growing at an extraordinary pace, but the Inc. 500 ranking confirms the growth we have achieved is unmatched by all but a handful of companies,” said Heidi Thompson, President and co-owner of Scentsy with her husband Orville. “We are thrilled to be named one of the 20 fastest-growing companies in all of America, and we sincerely commend and thank our outstanding corporate team and our independent party consultants for maintaining the focus on quality, value and service through the challenges of such rapid growth.”

Scentsy earned its ranking on the Inc. 500 for increasing its annual revenues from $2,176,876 in 2006 to $178,375,434 in 2009, a cumulative growth rate of 8,094%. This was the first time Scentsy nominated itself for the list. Incredibly, the company grew at an even higher rate during the previous three-year period (2005-2008). It is notable that only seven companies among the top 200 had higher 2009 sales than Scentsy. The vast majority of companies on the Inc. 500 are much smaller.

In 2004, Scentsy opened its doors as a direct sales company, offering a safe, wickless alternative to burning open flame candles in homes and offices. Customers saw its flameless candles as not just a safer option but as a better option. Scentsy’s success can be attributed to a simple but compelling product line available through more than 70,000 Independent Consultants that sell the scented candles at home parties, through catalog or basket parties as well as online.

“At Scentsy we always strive to bring value to customers by creating and selling high-quality products that warm the heart, enliven the senses, and inspire the soul,” said Orville Thompson, Scentsy Chief Executive Officer and co-owner. “We are humbled at the tremendous customer response and loyalty that our products have generated. And we are honored to be recognized by the Inc. 500, where such major companies as Microsoft and Oracle gained early exposure.”

Npros.com | 7/22/2010

With a 2009 sales figure of $178.4 million, a well known fragrance company that goes by the name of Scentsy has acquired the 64th slot on a Global list of the top 100 direct selling companies in the world, which is compiled annually by Direct Selling News (DSN). DSN is the official publication of the Direct Selling Association, and is generally considered one of the most comprehensive reports in the industry. Listed companies range from annual sales of over $10 billion for first place entry to roughly $67 million for the one hundredth place entry.

“This ranking validates the tremendous growth Scentsy has experienced, but our success is merely a result of passionate customers and party consultants, and an outstanding corporate team. Scentsy began operations in 2004 with its wickless candles that offer an alternative to the standard open flame archetype. The company's record highs remained strong throughout 2009 as customers saw the new product as a safer option. “At Scentsy we always strive to bring value to customers by creating and selling high-quality products that warm the heart, enliven the senses, and inspire the soul. As Sharon Gordley opened the door of her home, a sweet scent filled the air. "It's black raspberry vanilla," she said.

The scent came from a Scentsy scent bar melted in a pretty ceramic warmer. Gordley is a consultant for the home-based company that offers its scent bars and warmers at in-home parties and through business displays.

Gordley says she and her daughter, Kristen Blogg, are candle fanatics. "We especially loved Yankee candles until one of my daughter's friends sent her a Scentsy system as a Christmas gift.

It's an interesting concept: wickless scented candles that don't use flame, but rather melt from the heat of a 25-watt bulb in a decorative candle warmer. Even without a salesperson's insistence that "scents bring people together," you might be inclined to make a purchase, just to see what all the fuss is about.

This reaction is largely responsible for Meridian company Scentsy's explosive growth.

Four years ago, Scentsy operated in a 40-foot, air-conditioned ocean-freight container on a sheep farm. In five years, it has grown more than 300 percent annually. Its revenue was $109 million in the year that ended June 30.
